What is Breathwork?

How can breathwork help relieve stress and other emotional problems?

In an expertly guided breathwork consultation we reverse the process of what happens in situations that literally take our breath away.  If we receive a shock, like nearly getting run over while crossing the road, we momentarily hold our breath.  If we are chronically stressed, we shallow breath - and this adds to our lack of well being.  Strong emotion is very frequently accompanied by a momentary holding of our breath, and this seems to lock the accompanying emotions into the cells of our body.  If they remain unprocessed our stress levels increase, or sometimes we can become depressed with the effort of "keeping the lid on it all".

What is the scientific backing behind breathwork?

These days there is a wealth of scientific data in the fields of neuroscience and psychology on the beneficial effects of mindfulness, conscious breathing and awareness on physical, emotional and mental well being.  A quick internet search will provide you with reputable academic papers giving evidence of how breathing in various ways and mindfulness positively effect well being.

Recently a quantitative study at the University of Queensland showed that after only 3 breathwork sessions the clients with high anxiety and/or depression regained scores within the normal population range.  Science, in my opinion, is just confirming what Breathwork practitioners have always known find out more (www.annharrison.com.au)

The physiology of breathing and breathing techniques are important, yet Ann's expertise is in how certain forms of Breathwork create non-ordinary states of consciousness where an individual has access to greater resources within themselves.

Ann offers consultations, workshops and trainings, a new way of seeing life as well as practical techniques for stress management, personal and spiritual growth.

Breathwork is an extraordinarily simple yet profoundly powerful technique's which allows us to get rid of disabling emotions and unknown sources of depression or hopelessness.  It also brings a sense of optimism and of having control over ourselves and our lives.

Ann's special interests
For over 25 year Ann has explored the practical use of ancient principles and techniques and made them practical and relevant in the 21st century.  Having studied martial arts with Grand Masters in China and meditation in India, Nepal and Tibet she lived and worked in a remote retreat centre for 7 years before bringing her work back into the world.  Now the Australian government has recognized the Breathwork trainings she began to develop during that period.
