Acupuncture & Chinese Medicine with Rebecca Cannon

Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine practice have developed over the past 3000 years.

It is a time tested medicine.

Historical origins have been traced back to archeological remains in China, Japan, Vietnam, Taiwan and Korea. Ancient texts have been translated and are a continual source of interest for medical scholars & natural health practitioners worldwide. In China, during the 1960’s practice of this medicine was refined to become known as Traditional Chinese Medicine, enabling translated medical texts, techniques and knowledge to become more accessible to the western world. It is gentle and holistic in its approach to treating imbalances and disease within the body.  The unique factors that set TCM apart from western medicine is that it aims to  address the  root cause as well as relieving the symptoms of disease, eventually  restoring balance and wellness to your whole health, and preventing the condition from re-occurring. EVERY treatment is tailored to suit the health needs and goals of the individual.

What does a treatment involve?

Your initial treatment will consist of a thorough consultation, discussing your current condition, dietary patterns,  medical history and your health aims and goals. Generally a course of treatment is recommended, this can be anywhere from 2-6 weekly treatments, again this depends on your current state of health. Depending on the presenting condition, a treatment can consist of acupuncture, massage/acupressure, moxabustion, cupping, guasha, Chinese herbs, diet, breath exercises and lifestyle recommendations.

Acupuncture

Involves gently inserting micro-fine needles into specific acupoints running along meridians, our energy highways  in the body. Ma0ny of these points are located close to anatomical landmarks of the skeletal structure.  The needles are usually left in place for as little as  3 seconds and up to  20-30 minutes,  depending on the nature of your presenting state of health and condition. The acupuncture helps to increase blood circulation to the local area, and activate a number of systemic positive physiological responses throughout the body, namely the release of endorphins, your body’s in built natural pain killers and feel good hormones.

Rebecca is particularly interested in a classical form of acupuncture known as 5 element acupuncture –grounding treatments to soothe your body, mind and spirit. Great for helping to release emotional tension and helping you move forward with life.

Moxabustion is a heating therapy using a compressed herbs which are ignited to direct intense heat over an area to help increase circulation, remove cold &  blockages and also pain.

Cupping/Guasha : techniques that help to improve micro-circulation of blood in the vessels and help to draw toxins out of the deeper layers of the muscles.

Chinese herbs combine a well balanced variety of plant and mineral substances that work together to strengthen your constitution and relieve your symptoms.  Some  common herbs can be found in your  garden or on your spice rack at home! Ginger,  turmeric, cinnamon,  peppermint, liquorice, ginseng, patchouli, chrysanthemum, dandelion root, bamboo shoots, seaweeds, magnolia & gardenia buds and twigs, mandarin peel, apricot kernel and sesame seeds are just some of the ingredients that are used.

A balanced diet, regular  exercise and positive lifestyle choices  contribute to remaining well and preventing disease.
